Galapagos Islands
Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are a volcanic set of islands located near the equator. The 18 total islands more specifically lie in the Pacific Ocean and are home to a multitude of unique species, some found only here. The largest island is called Isabela and accounts for nearly half the total area of all the islands combined. The Galapagos were made famous by English explorer / naturalist Charles Darwin. Darwin is most famously noted for his theories on evolution and how we all share common ancestors. His work is fascinating and was spurred by his many trips to the Galapagos islands. There are nearly 23,000 natives to the islands, speaking mainly Spanish as their native language. The Galapagos are owned by their nearest land neighbors, Ecuador.
